(Des Moines, IA) Medicap Pharmacy’s sixth annual flu shot campaign, in partnership with Food Bank of Iowa, has resulted in more than 12,900 vaccines administered and $20,000 raised to support Iowans facing food insecurity.
Funds raised by 21 participating central Iowa Medicap locations will support Food Bank of Iowa partners in the 11 counties these stores serve.
As local community pharmacies, Medicap Pharmacy is connected to the communities it serves. Residents benefitting from the Food Bank partnership are their neighbors. Through bulk purchasing power, retail food rescue and relationships with producers and manufacturers, Food Bank of Iowa can deliver a meal to an Iowan in need for about 40 cents. Medicap Pharmacy’s donation will provide 50,000 meals.
"Our flu shot partnership with Food Bank of Iowa is valuable to people in our local counties who have been struggling to provide food for their families, and it helps protect our community from preventable illness,” says Greg Johansen, R.Ph., regional president of OneroRx. “This year especially, people are experiencing vaccine burnout, between the COVID vaccines and the flu shot, so the partnership has been a helpful resource to encourage more people to protect themselves while feeding their neighbors.”
Food Bank of Iowa has seen an exponential increase in the need for food assistance, the highest in its 41-year history. More than 350,000 Iowans live in poverty. One in seven working Iowa households can’t afford basic necessities. Medicap Pharmacy’s donation will directly and positively impact local communities, providing nutritious food for children, families and seniors.
